16 Months Old

Mena turned 16 months old today. She weighs 24 pounds. Teething has become more prominent this month. Mena is chewing on anything she can find, including the kitchen towel! Bibs are again a must with her drooling like Niagra Falls again. No teeth have broken through but the two next to her top front teeth are trying to make an appearance. We've moved Mena up into size 5 shoes. They stay on so much better than the old shoes. Clothes sizes have stayed the same.

Mena's physical development is coming right along. She can now sit up and drink out of her sippy cup all by herself. We've introduced the spoon and she tries but not much is making it into her mouth at this point. She's learned to crawl backwards down the stairs (thanks to all the help we had from Sue, the physical therapist). Mena is also now walking while only holding one of our hands. Mena has made up her mind it's time to learn these skills and she's taken off.

Mena is talking more, both verbally and with sign language. Her first understandable verbal word is "hi." She frequently holds a toy phone to her ear and says "hi" and "ya." I'd like to know who taught her to say "ya" as much as her mommy does! Mena is also starting to use some sign language. She signs "more" meaning "more food." One night I was trying to feed her cottage cheese with pineapple. She was not very happy with me and refused to open her mouth to eat it. She signed more and pointed to the cabinet where we keep her crackers. I ignored her thinking she was just messing around, but when she did the same thing two more times I figured she seriously wanted some crackers. She has also started to sign "book." She gets pretty excited when she realizes that I know what she's trying to tell me!

That's Mena and Mommy's hands to compare size.
